The Sydney Seafood Index
Welcome to the Sydney Seafood Index. These pages have a range of information about seafood price, availability, and seasonality. They are based upon information collected from the Sydney Fish Markets.
Currently, the following information is calculated for each species of fish:
- Seasonality: which months are the best to buy this fish? This is based on historical data of what quantity of fish has been sold. It might be argued that this isn't the best way to determine seasonality, but there is definitely a strong correlation. Price almost always varies inversely with availability: if there is more available (ie. it is in season), the price drops. This is definitely true at wholesale, as can be seen in the graphs included for each fish, but these changes in price may not be reflected at your local fish shop.
- Yearly Price Changes: How does the price and availability of this fish change over the course of a year? This is based on averaged historical data. Seafood seems to have a very cyclical pricing pattern, and so these averages behave pretty well. This should let you work out seasonality for yourself, too, and see how dramatically things change.
- Historical Pricing Data: The full historical chart of price and quanity for the fish.
There might be more information in the future. There is another source of information that includes types of preparation (whole, fillet, frozen, etc) and grade (quality) but this is daily information and is not available historically; over time this might be used, but not yet.
